This is what happened to Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal who is now running for a Senate seat. In one of his speeched in 2008 in Norwalk, he said that he served during the war in Vietnam.

One of his possible opponents, Republican primary candidate former Rep. Rob Simmons is using the issue of Richard Blumenthal Vietnam service in his favor and against her closest rival in the Republican primary, Linda McMahon.
