BP Top Kill Procedure Failed: What Now?

By - Published: Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

BP Oil Spill Must Stop, we need a new BP Oil Spill Solution – this is the clamor of all people worldwide. It seems that  actions taken to contain BP oil spill which started in the Gulf Coast of Mexico were all unsuccessful. As long as I can remember, the oil spill containment method started with the use of BP Oil Boom Equipments. After that, BP implemented a huge containment dome about the size of a four-storey building but  that particular oil spill solution did not prove to be successful. Even the million dollar project of actor Kevin Costner which involved oil separators using several centrifugal machines to separate oil from water proved to be no match to the pressure of the BP oil leak from the broken oil pipe.

BP and the US Government have taken joint actions to contain this BP oil spill, the latest of which was a plan called BP Top Kill Procedure involving huge amounts of mud used to block the broken oil pipe causing the oil leak. What could be the next oil spill solution that BP and the US Government would take? Will this be successful enough to at last seal the broken oil pipe? What are your suggestion to finally contain this BP oil spill to stop the BP oil leak from continuously spilling oil into the ocean?

We here at Mioboo together with the US Government and British Petroleum (BP) were all thinking of the best oil spill containment method. We should be united in this BP oil spill. If you have any suggestions of the next BP oil spill solution, please let us know by leaving a comment below:

Alternatively, you can also tune in to our partner site for BP Oil Spill Live Feed HERE for you to witness the ROV below the ocean bed and watch the BP oil leak. We’re all in search for the Oil Spill Solution that will finally contain this BP Oil Spill. For more updates on BP oil spill live feed updates, tune in to us here.

Meanwhile, if you want to know what really happened in the oil rig which caused this BP oil spill, then we have the story HERE. The Oil Spill must stop now. We need to take the necessary actions to solve this oil spill.

If liquid nitrogen were injected along with the top kill procedure would this result in freezing of the mud oil mixture? Just a thought.

install a large re-infoced dome over ruptured pipe, pump heated
sea water into the dome to raise the temperature of the oil and
gas to avoid percipitates, pump to scrubber.

Honestly The BOP is the best all round sghot you not only stop the well but you can later use this same well as it was intended and recoop losses also us the revenue to pay all expensies of cleanup monentary losses and long term Gulf maintanance from the damages. This well should be used again but all profit given to undoing what was done. Its there make use of it

First and formost let me state that are so called African American President should have never given permission to resume oil drilling offshore. Personally he’s a fool a typical court jester who hasn’t made a good desision since his presidency began. Wake up people we can’t afford to let that fool make any more mistakes or this country will fold from within and then guess whats next? Read your history on other great nations and that will give you some idea of our future if we don’t impeach him! Secondly I want to ask BP where were the shut off valves and back flow preventers? As a welder/ pipefitter for over 15 years I know they manufacture these protective devices Hell we are required by LAWS to use these protective devices in Chillwater air conditioning systems so why didn’t you? Your company did not want to pay the money for those devices and you figured no one would dive down mile in the ocean to make sure you did. So now that we have established Bp cut corners and bettween them and an idot as President we are faceing the worst man made enviornmental disaster ever. My personal opinion SEize all Bp’s assets impeach that fool we have as a President use all there money to try to fix the problem jail the idots simply because if I’m out fishing and catch a Redfish longer than 24 in. I would go to jail if not prison! These business men are destroying an entire ocean!

When they reclaim sand for beaches they use large air compressors and feed the air up through the end of a riser. The upwad motion creates a vacuum at the lower end of the riser which, if placed above the leak, would at least draw the oil to the riser, the top end of-which would be fed into a barge or ship. The oil/water mixture would settle out.

stick a huge non aired up baloon like a air baloon with a tube with holes in it in the middle then blast it full with mega pressure as used in blasting that trash in there and repeatfinally blasting it with mud then cement the baloon should hopefully be made of thick rubber like used in tire tubes but thicker. Rubberize a submarine and run it in that hole. I voulanteer if a suacide mission is necessary to ram the sub

where they are pumping mud into the BPO they should be sucking on it, unlest there a checkvalve in there connection. this in turn would drop the

    this connection Regards J.J. Edwards

  12. a pipe cap, meant to go around the well opening, anchored either with bolts (several feet long with spikes that jut out the sides)shot into the bedrock or before placing the cap on, you sink 4 or 5 1 ton concrete blocks around the hole and anchor the pipe cap on those , then winch it down
alternatively you could use a pipe cap with an open top that can be closed after placement
then top it off with cement and a few boulders on top of the cement should do the trick

Low tec: use connected high altitude balloons to chanel the oil to the surface and corral the oil and pump it into a ship. this will by time to drill relief wells and close the leak

if only Billy Mays was still alive he would have something that would work, some sort of supper MIGHTY putty or something!!

how about we build some sort of steal umbrella device then back it into the hole in reverse with a switch that can open up the umbrella end the pressure of the oil would force it to open up and block the pipe, we just need it to have some sort of teeth or rubber edge to jam it in to the pipe so it wont just blow out the pipe.

  15. Toby says:
    May 31st

Build a large funnel to put over the leak to caught as much as possible. attached that to a pipe long enough to reach the surface. Then start pumping it into oil tankers until someone can figure out a solution to actually stop. Instead of letting it run into the ocean. It would be a lot of work, but I think it can be done

  16. Dante says:

Place a large charge a mile into the rock and detonate. The rock debris and subsequent cavity in the bedrock should provide enough material for complete blockage.

  17. Toby says:

Maybe drill into other parts of the oil cavity to relieve some pressure. Then try to cap it with mud or whatever.

  22. Dave Grant says:
    May 31st

Modify the “four story building” so the top is hinged like a bank vault. Place it covering the leak with the door open. This is more like setting a sleeve in place. Since the top is open the sides can sink into the ocean floor. Anchor the assembly with blocks and chains (top still open) pump into the open box lots of concrete until it is nearly full and close the lid. There will be an initial pressure spike but valves on the lid could be open when closing the lid and shut down sequentially to slowly stop the flow without a huge pressure spike.

This would work, flexible tube and high pressure balloon system-enough to stop the leak to then cap it or fill it….the next thing they are going to try is in 47 days? OMG! so sad!!!!!!!!!

  24. Bill lothman says:
    May 31st

before BP attempts such a risky procedure; such as cutting off the pipe (producing increased flow of oil). They need to have in place 20 SUPER TANKERS surrounding the oil pool as it reaches the surface in case the containment dome fails to work. This will allow the containment of the excess oil within the inside circle created by the ring of SUPER TANKERS. Thus allowing the processing of the oily water (i.e. separating oil and water- discharging the water and storing the oil) to be done in a controlled way!!

    comments please!

I’m sickened at the lack of a focused government response at the very beginning. We’re talking A MILE DEEP for God’s sakes…this is “black ops” depth..you KNOW CIA/NAVY has capability of operating at these depths..where’s the spirit of purpose that gave us the Glomar Explorer?
The Kenyan is an idiot, Bush was a puppet, and if ANYBODY thinks that ANY PRESIDENT ( no matter how much I COMPLETELY DISLIKE that obnoxious dirty politician who hates America and bows to shine the shoes of Arab kings…) is at fault for this mess, is an idiot themselves. Our lust for cheap energy to drive our cars and to manufacture our worldly goods, to run our consumer-based society is to blame..where everything we buy, eat, wear or look at is literally steeped in bunker oil. Even the dubious Prius…without bunker oil it would not be here….don’t fool yourselves.

This mess will go on, unabated until the second relief well is drilled. In the meantime, government/military deep sea vessels could have cut broken pipe and installed a second manifold over it and began reclaiming the oil weeks ago.

What nobody has dared to imagine out loud, and I say this with complete abject seriousness, is……” what are the hurricanes going to do with the oil? Will the storms of summer push the oil up into the Mississippi river? Will storm surge crash the oil spill into industrial complexes, and start a fire?

    WILL THE SEAS BURN?????

  26. Kim Stablespoon is right–the leak needs to be stopped immediately. The approaches BP has taken so far shows their main concern is still being able to use the well, but with a looming environmental and economic crisis this big I think it makes more sense to just plug the leak. Period. A company called Menck in Germany already has a tested and working deep-sea underwater pile driver, hydraulically powered, self contained, that is pressure self-equalizing and works at that kind of depth. It could be lowered from a ship and used to hammer a steel-reinforced high density concrete pile of the right diameter down into the hole far enough to plug the leak. I’m more of an imagineer than an engineer, but if there are any folks out there with valid engineering degrees, what do you think? They’re already using sub-sea pile drivers to anchor oil platforms in the Gulf. Why not use one to jam a “cork” down that hole?

  27. wally callow says:
    May 31st

If the top kill fails, I would suggest encasing hundreds of tons of broken-up concrete and rocks and cement in steel netting, and lowering it over the BOP, after cutting the riser near the connection point. And then lower another load, then another, until completly buried, and oil flow stopped. And don’t wait for the leak to stop before the clean-up operation! Seems like the entire Navy and Coast Guard should have been out there weeks ago.

  28. Ivan Thompson says:

Not knowing the shape or configuration of the pipe stem or equipment coming out of the ocean floor, is it feasible that a flexible “hose” connection can be afixed to the stem and the other end of the flexible “hose” affixed to a pipe that extends to the surface. Similar to a radiator hose connection. Just an idea.

Like it or not, anyone knowledgeable to offshore drilling knows full well that the ONLY way to stop leaks/blowouts is to drill a relief well. That takes 2-3 MONTHS. You can’t change the laws of physics. – Insider

  31. John MacGyver says:

I agree Sabrina, using several explosive charges planted deep enough around the well. This would squeeze it shut well below the gulf’s floor. The Russians have done this in the past using nukes.

By the time they could make enough tubing capable of handling Liquid nitrogen, they’ll have completed the other 2 relief wells.

IMO, BP does not want this well plugged yet. They’ll have to stop drilling the relief wells when they get this one plugged.

The government pencil whipped the safety inspections, so they’re not going to push the issue very hard.

    Hey Richard,

What color is your neck? Red, by any chance? Keep your racist comments to yourself, and re-read recent history. I seem to remember Republicans chanting “Drill baby Drill!” while implying Obama was a terrorist. The company responsible for the cement collar around the blow-out preventer that failed just happens to be Halliburton. This is the same contractor who makes BILLIONS from the War in Iraq. That would be the same war started by Bush and Cheney. That would be the same Cheney who was former CEO of Halliburton. Do you see where I’m going with this? Obama is left holding the bag, and as usual, we blame everyone but ourselves. Bush was re-elected (or at least that’s what we were led to believe – look up stories on Diebold and their voting machine manipulation scandal). The big picture is much bigger, much worse than any of us could have imagined. And this tragic oil spill is just more of greed’s legacy. No regulation. No oversight. No accountability for YEARS. No conscience. Where are the Republicans now? i don’t hear anyone chanting about drilling, do you? Still want them to drill in the Alaskan Wilderness? Where is Cheney anyway. His big mouth suddenly dropped out of sight. Nope. They’ve raped and pillaged the environment a long time now, and it’s all coming home to roost. We’re screwed, and we let it happen. Time to suffer the consequences. You can’t just jam the toothpaste back into the tube, or the oil back into the sea floor. What the oil won’t kill, the chemical dispersants will. And we’ll never know what’s in those chemical dispersants either. That’s not on Obama. That’s on all of us. We let it happen. We let people like Bush?Cheney steal the Presidency. We let idiots like Sarah Palin end up on the front page, and even be a candidate for Vice President. “Drill baby drill!”. Right. How’s that philosophy working for ya?

Why not just put a big vacume cleaner type hose down ther and suck the oil up into a waiting tanker ship? Make the sucker bigger than the leaking pipe and allow it to bring up water also, that should keep the flow going even if the gas is freezing and they can then pump the excess water out of the bottom of the tanker.

Another idea why not just put a big self tapping screw in the end of the pipe?

Mabey the could saw off the end so they have a nice clean end, then run a pipe die around it and then screw on another tube to pull the stuff to the surface?

There is a very easy way BP could stop this horrific leak. Put BP on the rag! Buy a million BP Stop The Leak Save Our Beaches T-shirts and stuff them in the hole like tampons! Get ‘em at http://www.bpoilspill.byteland.org Why that would surely do the trick! And if there are any left over, use ‘em to mop up the goo in booms before it reaches the beaches or wetlands. Plus you could use ‘em to clean the goo off of pelicans, avocets and other birds. BP would even benefit because their logo appears upon the BP Stop The Leak Save Our Beaches gifts & apparel. Why what works for a woman on the rag surely would work for BP! There ain’t much difference in a menstrual flow and an oil leak, ‘cept one gives you a head ache and the other stinks up the whole ocean … in either case a rag is the answer! Stuff it with BP Stop The Leak Save Our Beaches T-shirts, sweatshirts and thongs! Put BP on the rag! That will do the trick! Hee, hee, Sorry, I can’t stop laughing! :-) This is so funny even if I do say so myself. Sometimes you just have to laugh when things are so bad. It helps to chuckle. But seriously, anyone who wants to help can buy BP Stop The Leak Save Our Beaches gifts and apparel at http://www.cafepress.com/bytelandart/7175211 We also have “The Last Pelican” and those crazy “Shark Checking Out the BP Oil Spill” gifts/apparel you may have seen on ABC. Drill, Baby, Drill! was the chant of the entire campaign for the Republican side of things. You can’t say now that its being allowed and there’s a disaster (which was predicted by the so called “environmentalist nuts”) that it’s the fault of the president because you don’t like him.

It doesn’t matter what you like until the next time you have a chance to elect, then you go out and you try to convince people to vote for your choice. Anyway, do some research, don’t try to blame “are” president for the failures that were put in place and would have happened regardless of who came to power.

Use a pipe smaller then the main oil line to insert into the main oil line assuming the back pressure isn’t greater then the oil force blowing out of the ground. Team with goodyear and or a rubber company to build a large inflatable balloon on the end of the smaller line. Insert smaller line balloon end first about some odd meters into main line then inflate the balloon with water or air. The tread of the balloon would need some type of degreaser pocket once the inflating began. Although it could potentially slip out it could stop it long enough to back fill with cement. Sort of like an inflatable valve. Mechanical Engineering Student, ideas are ideas wish I could help more

My fellow Americans, I am Russian woman who has lived in the United States for 7 years now. I am married to an American man and we have two kids, one of them is a 4 year old girl who was born here in the U.S. I would like to share my feelings with you regarding the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. When I saw the ocean for the first time 5 years ago, I was amazed at with the beauty of it, it is truly a wonder. I fell in love with the ocean when I first saw it. We took another trip to the ocean in 2008, and this year we wanted to go to Florida and show our little girl the ocean once again. It doesn?t look like we?ll be able to do that though, because of this oil disaster. Every day I cry, and suffer and pray to god that he can stop this oil spill. I love this world. I love the animals, birds, and all living things. It really hurts me to see the oil killing the sea life and everything else. My friends and family tell me ?Why are you so upset about this? This isn?t your home country.? But one thing that they don?t understand is the fact that America is now my home. I want my kids, our kids, to see the beauty of this world.

Please save the dolphins, whales, frogs, etc?they are helpless. I beg of you people. I love you people!!! I?m with you with all of my heart. Your pain is my pain. God bless America!

I have not been following the history of this spill. However if there is any kind of pipe sticking up, I would suggest a giant hydraulic pinching device like a jaws of life. First pinch it flat, then fold it. It may not totally stop it, but at least slow it down and buy time. I’ve done this on a much smaller scale with success. The pinching device could be left in place if necessary.

  44. I suggest ‘barge after barge’ of Taconite Pellets. Perhaps even 100-barges. Taconite pellets contain high ‘iron’ content and are much heavier than rock. These will settle together and compactly to form a ‘cap’. This cap could then be driven ‘home’ with a percussion/incendiary device designed to work with gravity pushing downward compressing and solidifying the Taconite into a very heavy and solid ‘cap’.

Excuse me, all of you non-Louisianians who would like to hold forth on the devastation wrought by the BRITISH Petroleum oil-rig explosion and blame the results of it on our president. The present guidelines that allowed for this explosion–and response to it–were set forth by George W. Bush and his predecessors. President Obama —who, like most true Louisianians, myself included, is of “mixed” heritage—inherited this disaster and the guidelines for managing it.

I am pale, blond and blue-eyed, but I am so thankful for my Creole-Cajun ancestry, which has given me a culturally-rich experience of life, depth of and connection to ancestral history and sense of belonging to our Gulf of Mexico —that is now being destroyed by BP.

I thank God that our president is African American because I feel that he understands the position of an historically-downtrodden people (Cajuns) because they rank last or second-to-last in every important economic indicator. Not one of you little armchair-presidents could do any better, and I defy you to prove it. Btw, after reading your illiterate entries, most of you self-professed Republicans couldn’t spell your way out of a wet paper bag, and your grammar is embarrassing to any public elementary school teacher. Shame on you for being so stupid. I suppose you want to blame your ignorance on Obama too. But, I suspect, that you are proud of being “dum.” Isn’t it pretty to think so?

The answer is simple, and it’s ridiculous that no one has yet mentioned it. Simply use a hydraulic clamp and crush the pipe closed prior to the area where the pipe is broken. NO SHIT!

  49. Most of what I am seeing on the comments is a bunch of cry babies. Air planes crash all the time and no one says stop flying air planes . there have been hundreds of deep water wells drilled with few accidents and everyone is ready to shut down the drilling .Pretty shallow people if you ask me , the president included. As long as planes fly and wells are drilled there will be accidents. The best laid plans of mice and men ——–.I say drill baby drill ! I’m not ready for $10.00 per gallon gas just yet !

  50. Question ? If they can cut the pipe off why can’t they remove the top flange connection just below the cut? Looks like Replace would be better than repair. They are the ones who put the flange on in the first place. If they have access to the open riser just run drill pipe in and plug the darn thing from the bottom up ,the way they would plug any other well. Been there done that !
