Dennis Gabor Biography and the Google Doodle Holography

By - Published: Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Noticed the Holography image of Google on your search engine pages? Google celebrates Dennis Gabor’s birthday this June 5. Dennis Gabor, unknown to some is the father of Holography. He dedicated most of his studies in the input and output of electrons which then led his to the discovery of holograms. He won a Nobel Prize back in 1971.

Holography is a technique that that allows the light scattered from an object to be recorded and later reconstructed so that it appears as if the object is in the same position. Today we use Holograms to store, retrieve and process information. Holograms protect us from forgery and so many companies are using it in verifying originality of products. For schools, holograms are used for teaching students to gain a better illustration of things. In museums, most precious items are made into holograms to protect incidents of theft, and for theme parks, people can experience seeing places without the need for travel etc.

Isn’t the technology from Holography that Dennis Gabor brought just awesome? Happy 110th birthday to Dennis Gabor!

    I know literally nothing about science but i know this. Without Gabor’s contribution to science there would be no CNN feed of Will. I. Am. during Obama’s election show. and that at least warrants something. right?

  3. Thank you very much for your Google Hologram Doodle,
    it was what led me to learn who Dennis Gabor;
    and I liked your logo too! :)

  4. I enjoyed this Google about Dennis Garbor and I did not know who he was, so I learned something today. I usually don’t click on those but now I am going to click more often. Thanks so much.

    “holograms are from star wars im pretty sure”

    lol.

    That’s the best comment yet. Holograms were used “in” Star Wars, but not invented by the Star Wars creators. I could be wrong, however, and Reese’s Pieces are from ET, and mashed potatoes are from Close Encounters of the third Kind.

    I thought of Star Trek, Star Wars, stickers, and math when I read about Dennis Gabor. Knowledge is power, even though it’s sometimes only good for Jeopardy questions. Because the spirit never dies, Happy Birthday, Dennis Gabor!!!
